Why I’m Taking on The Long Run

This September, for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, I’m giving it all I’ve got by taking part in The Long Run to raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

For me, prostate cancer is more than just a statistic — it’s personal.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer around four years ago, at just 49 years of age, after a routine blood test. For several years I was fortunate enough to be on active surveillance, but eventually the cancer progressed and I needed to undergo surgery earlier this year.

Thankfully, my treatment was successful, but the journey doesn’t simply end when the surgery is over. Recovery takes time, and prostate cancer can have an impact on many aspects of your life — physically, mentally and emotionally.

Going through it myself has made me realise just how important awareness, early detection, research and support are.

Prostate cancer is Australia's leading cause of cancer, with 79 men newly diagnosed every day.

Behind every one of those numbers is a man, a family and a story.

That's why I'm taking on The Long Run. I want to do something positive with my experience and help raise funds to support the important work being done by the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
