I’m taking on The Long Run!

This September, I’m taking part in The Long Run.

I’ve committed to conquering 150kms to raise funds and awareness for Aussie men and families fighting prostate cancer.

Please support me by making a tax deductible donation to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Together, we can make sure our fathers, brothers, sons, husbands and mates will be there for the long run.

How much have we raised and where does it go

Wednesday 23rd Sep

To date the Prostate Cancer Foundation Long Run in September has raised over $1.29M. With just over 3500 participants and still over a week to go we are making a real difference raising funds to bring us closer to a world where prostate cancer is no longer a burden and where all men and their families with a diagnosis are supported.

During the past five years the Prostate Cancer Foundation has raised over $31M for research with at least six game-changing projects between $1 and $6M currently in train.

We’re boosting our support for Australian men affected by prostate cancer, with 25 new specialist nurses starting from July this year and another 15 new nurses starting from June 2021. 43% of our nurses are based in regional areas and this number is increasing. The number of nurses in NSW will double over the next 2 years.  In addition you have helped raise $420,000 for Australia’s first Prostate Cancer Telenursing Service set to start in early 2021.

As we finish the 3rd week I have raised over $3900 and completed 284km. In the last week and so far this month I could have walked to Gulgong (184km), Lake Cargelligo (196km), Temora (198km), Lithgow (217km), Nyngan (230km), Mt Victoria (236km), Junee (252km), Katoomba (254km), Coonabarabran (278km), Coonamble (280km) or Wagga Wagga (283km). Your support and encouragement is what is driving me to take those steps every single day.

We had our regular walkers again last Saturday and a few new starters (some older ones that put me to shame). Our 9.00am group walk this coming Saturday (26 Sept) will start and finish at Lions Park (Orange Rd). This will be our last Saturday walk and will be followed by a free BBQ for all and drinks for all the walkers. A coffee van will be onsite from around 10am for those needing that pick me up.

With just over a week to go there is still time to support me by making a tax deductible donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. I still have some personal goals to achieve before the end of the month. More about these in my update next week.

Dollar Match Day, when every dollar donated will be matched by our wonderful sponsors

Thursday 17th Sep
The Long Run is on track to be the biggest EVER fundraising event for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
So far we’ve raised nearly $1 million dollars for men impacted by prostate cancer and their families.
But we have even more exciting news to share. Tomorrow is Dollar Match Day, when every dollar donated will be matched by our wonderful sponsors Tyrepower and ATOM Community Engagement Fund.
That means every donation made from 8:00 AM AEST tomorrow will be matched dollar for dollar. 💵💵
For one day, you can have twice the impact on those brothers, dads, sons and partners battling a prostate cancer diagnosis.
From 8am tomorrow, your donations will go twice as far towards ensuring the men we love will be here for the long run.
Thanks for your awesome support.

The 2nd week..

Thursday 17th Sep

Are you aware that every 25 seconds, one man will be diagnosed with prostate cancer somewhere in the world! Prostate cancer is a global challenge, requiring local action. Every 25 minutes an Aussie bloke is diagnosed with prostate cancer.

We need to RAISE $1 MILLION for research and support this September. We want to eliminate avoidable cancer deaths and improve the quality of life for survivors.

About 211,000 Australian men are alive today after a diagnosis of prostate cancer and 20,000 men will be diagnosed this year. By 2040, the number of survivors is forecast to increase by 76% to nearly 372,000.

It is vital that men know their family history of prostate cancer and face the future armed with everything they need to know to beat it. Prostate cancer awareness and education is the key – it could save your life or the life of someone you love.

The second week of my walk has been a big one. I have passed my target for the month of at least 150km have completed 181kms this week. In the last week and so far this month I could have walked to Tullamore (90km), Orange (100km), Condobolin (103km), Narromine (105km), Wellington (110km), Dubbo (124km), Albert (127km), Trangie (139km), Tottenham (143km) or Bathurst (155km). Donations and sponsorship continue with much support with my total around $2250.

We had another good rollup last Saturday for our regular walk (5km) around town with a few new starters (including a dog). What a great way to start your week-end in the fresh air and finish with a coffee. Don’t forget we start our walk from the Wholesome Blend Café (Cnr Clarinda and Bushman Sts) at 9.00am.

You are still able to support me by making a tax deductible donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

How far was that walk last week

Friday 11th Sep
My journey last week took me over 83km in total. To put that in perspective I could have walked from Parkes (my starting point) to Alectown (25km), or to Forbes (34km), or to Bogan Gate (44km), or to Peak Hill (50km), or to Manildra / Trundle (55km), or to Tomingley (68km), or to Cudal / Yeoval (69km), or to Molong (76km). I'll be looking to venture even further over this coming week!

The first week...

Wednesday 9th Sep

Well I have survived the first week and well on my way to walking (running) at least 150km to raise funds to support Aussie men and their families impacted by prostate cancer. My walking tally so far is 83kms.

I want to again thank all those that have sponsored and supported me so far with my current total donations at $1913. Without all your encouragement I would not be at this point so far. I want to make a real difference for all those fathers, brothers, sons, husbands and mates so they will be there for the long run. Not only will your support provide more valued research, it will also provide additional dedicated Prostate Care nurses particularly in regional areas.

We had a great rollout for our first public walk in Parkes last Saturday morning. The walkers enjoyed wonderful coffees and breakfast from the Wholesome Blend Café, which was our starting and finishing point for our 5km walk around town.
