We’re taking on The Long Run!

Last year, I ran for Dad, Ian Michael Vardanega, who was nearing on his 7^th year of his journey with Advanced Prostate Cancer.

I wasn’t in it for the fundraising but more for the awareness of regular checks and preventative measures to try and help others avoid the long and arduous progression that comes with a Cancer fight. I was blown away from the beginning when family and friends asked to join Sol’s team and wanted to walk along side and participate in the fundraising. Amazingly, with the generosity of so many, we were able to raise just shy of $13,000. Mum and Dad followed along and were there to see all the donations and messages of support, needless to say they were both left speechless and admired the amazing community we were surrounded by.

Last year, Dad’s results and feedback from Drs began on a downward spiral. Every bit of gratitude is more than deserving for all of the healthcare professionals, scientists, patients and family members on this journey. No role is more important, other than that of the patient themselves, in this great fight. They say it takes a village to raise a child, well the teams involved in Dad’s journey alone adds up to countless hours from The Kinghorn Cancer Centre, several wards at St. Vincent’s hospital Sydney and Canberra Hospital, Oncologists, Surgeons, Urologists, nuclear department professionals, Radiologists and the most amazing understaffed nurses.

Ian Michael Vardanega, who fought tooth and nail to live for his family, passed away on Tuesday morning, the 31^st May 2022 surrounded by family and nursing staff whom grew to admire him for his humorous nature right up to the end. I never wanted to see Dad as a statistic, or a name on a page, yet here we are.

This year for me, #Thelongrun is about a thank you for the endless support from those whom we barely know yet dedicate their time to nurture our loved ones and fight the good fight toward what is hopefully found in the not too distant future; a cure and a prevention. There is nothing ‘friendly’ about cancer so please don’t fool yourselves in to thinking it is ok to wait for that check-up because even ‘Active surveillance’ is better than no surveillance at all.

I can only speak from experience of our journey, there is so much potential out there in treatments and testing, yet, it is all too easy to run out of options at such a fast pace. We have such a long way to go, it is 2022 and we still have time delays for reasons such as ‘Christmas’ or working through ‘red tape’ with lawyers to finalise paperwork before a trial can begin, this is through no fault of the professionals but there is surely something we are missing. Cancer does not wait. Could it be down to limited funding? I am not sure, yet if it is then maybe this year is all about raising as much as possible to see a healthcare system that is fully staffed and can accommodate continuous year round options of treatment. Timing was not on Dad’s side this past year for the reasons mentioned, for this we are not bitter, it just needs to change.
