I’m making prostate cancer history.
I've started!
The Long Run for my Dad and for awareness
Hey everyone,
This September is 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵. In honour of my Dad, I'll be taking part in 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝘂𝗻 - covering 𝟴𝟯𝗸𝗺 to help raise funds and awareness for a cause that means everything to me.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝘂𝗻?
In early 2013, I lost my dad to a rare and aggressive form of prostate cancer. It happened far too quickly and still affects my family every day. This run is for him – a way to honour his memory and turn my grief into something positive.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝟴𝟯𝗸𝗺?
In Australia, The Long Run is traditionally 72km – one kilometre for each of the 72 Aussie men diagnosed with prostate cancer 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆. But as a Kiwi living in Aus, I’m adding 11 extra kilometres for the 11 New Zealand men also diagnosed daily.
That being said, full disclosure: I’m not a runner! My sister is the athletic one – Dad used to watch her smash cross-country races and marathons with so much pride. Me? I was the one whinging that I needed to sit down when he dragged us up the Bridle Path on the weekends.
But, anyone who knew my Dad knew he also loved cycling... and luckily for me, so do I! So I’ll be clocking up my 83km in a number of ways: running, biking, and occasionally shuffling along in a slow jog.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵...
Prostate cancer is the 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗻 across both New Zealand and Australia. But the good news is, if it's caught early then it’s usually highly treatable. However, too many people don’t find out until it’s too late - so I’m also doing this also to raise awareness and get some much needed conversations going. Remember: early detection could save your loved one's life.
My goal is to raise at least $𝟭,𝟬𝟬𝟬, and honestly, I’ve got no idea if I'll get there – but every bit helps!
🩵If you are able to chip in, thank you so so much! I am truly grateful.
🩵If you can’t, that’s absolutely okay too – sharing this, starting a convo, or checking in with the men in your life matters just as much.
Thanks so much for reading - and for being part of this with me
