The Long Run 2023

0%

I'm helping make love go the distance.

I’m taking on The Long Run

This time around I’m doing it differently.

Last year I got deeply involved, and rightly so in raising awareness for prostate cancer. I was, and still am too young to ignore the opportunity to help.

Running was my go to exercise. I went too hard!!!  As soon as I felt I could easily run my normal 10km, I upped my KMs and pushed too far and too quickly. Not totally understanding the full effects of hormone therapy and the loss of bone density.

I suffered pelvis and hip stress fractures.

I just WANTED to be the person I was before cancer.

The long run 2022 saw me get physically injured. later, unemployed and hitting an all-time low mentally with actual suicidal thoughts.

I raised nearly $10K and felt like a fraud because I couldn’t hold up my end of the bargain after all of the heartfelt kind donations.

The best option for me at the time mentally was by removing myself from multimedia and social platforms.

Ongoing psychology appointments have had a very positive effect on myself going forward, but I lost a platform to help raise awareness.

Unfortunately and understandably I also stepped back from my PCFA involvement to look after myself.

This year following corrective surgery for ED (erectile dysfunction), yet another side effect from prostate cancer. Ongoing ADT and its debilitating side effects of therapy are numerous and include hot flashes, osteoporosis, adverse psychological and metabolic effects. It has negatively impacted my functional, cognitive, and physical performance.

I’m concentrated on a healthy living whilst fighting cancer with mindfulness and wellness.

Mixed with apprehension and an acceptance of a weakened body, I’m strengthening my bones with supplements and exercise.

I’ve just started to take baby steps back into running. Hopefully by the time September comes around I’ll be good to run/walk 72km across the month (2-3km per day).

I have no doubt that with fundraising, awareness and future medical trials it will extend my life expectancy but I want to make sure others get the same chance too.

Along with your invaluable contributions, I am very grateful and appreciative that you took the time to read my chronicle.
