I’m taking on The Long Run
This September for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, I’m giving it all I’ve got by taking part in The Long Run.
In 2023, at just 48 years old my husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Prostate Cancer, something for which there is no cure. What started as a slightly elevated PSA in a routine blood test revealed itself to be a very aggressive prostate cancer with a Gleeson score of 9.
Now prostate cancer is often seen as an “old man’s” issue but what we were to learn was that it is becoming more common in younger men and is typically much more aggressive. For us this was very much the case, despite a successful radical prostatectomy with clear margins less than a month after diagnosis within 3 months it had metastasised into his bones and Matthew now had 12 cancer hotspots. He fought so hard with leading edge treatment protocols and research trials but this cancer was unrelenting and spread into his soft tissue. Just over 2 years after his diagnosis Matthew lost his battle.
So now as part of my healing journey I am lacing up my runners to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and the research they fund to help find new treatments.
