I’m taking on The Long Run

This September for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, I’m giving it all I’ve got by taking part in The Long Run.

Prostate cancer is Australia’s leading cause of cancer, with 72 men newly diagnosed every day.

My story - at 74 a reasonably fit and healthy guy who had never had any illness or hospital admissions since 16 went to my regular GP for an annual PSA blood test that came back at 6.7.  An appointment at the Urologist showed the presence of a lump, a biopsy showed cancer, scans showed it had escaped the prostate into lymph nodes around pelvis. Intense 39 treatments of Radiotherapy last year and ongoing Firmagon and Xtandi medication has my PSA at 0.013.  The diagnosis was not always easy to reconcile, but with the support of my wife and friends I am now in remission, and have returned to an active lifestyle, involvement in volunteer work and three walks a day with our Samoyed dog.
