Not Born To Sew

The art of wheeling a sewing  machines has never been my strong point. I mean in High School home economics a friend had to do my 'driving test' so I could pass and a male he was at that!
Here I am at 50yrs of age, working a sewing machine purchased from the local post office making girdles! Yes you read that right.

Whilst research is number one thing in the world of Prostate Cancer, I am an advocate for the little things. The day to day stuff that the men need to endure along with their cohorts. Be that their wife, daughter, sister, significant other, community nurse or four legged support team such as the pooch
.
Why mention the dog? Well our resident Ernie & Ralph have been known on occasion to get the hint when 'Pa' is not in the best frame of mind. They wonder over to the shed and go in for a look about and its 99.9% of the time teenager Ralph who is constantly told to 'Buggar off Flea Bag". Ralph is just happy to be about and is stealth at removing items from the shed.
So when it is a bad pain day, the catheter just isn't sitting right internally, the bag is faulty & leaking, bladder spasms hit and there is no hope to stop what gravity will do and leakage results or the tap on the leg bag catches on something and you can only imagine the outcome there, the result is the dogs have the best sense to leave well alone - as does the other human of the premises.

It isn't always about a pain that can be felt either. We need to remember that Hormone Treatment robs a man of his testosterone. Just like a woman goes through changes in menopause, so do our men when they are on this treatment.
The body changes a bit, flushes start, mood swings set in and the mental health of the man has the ability to decline.

I will say it - the sex drive may wane or become completely none existent.
This isn't just a physical show of - well no show - its a massive a man and their self worth.
Only in the past 18 months have we discussed this more. Partners often can start to feel so lonely. The cuddles aren't there, nice comments about ones look  aren't verbalised.
I asked the hard, shitty questions as this is how it feels. As it turns out the mental changes from treatments for prolonged periods has the ability to change the thinking patterns as well.

No testosterone = "I don't even think to hug you, it just doesn't enter my head. I just feel dead when it comes to that stuff".
Is that confronting to read and realise? Let me assure you its bloody tuff to hear it said to you as it is for the man saying it.
Having no feelings of affection forthcoming from natural will is certainly a realm that neither of us contemplating living. But here we are.

i can only hope the outing of such things I hope helps others feel less alone or that their relationship is stuffed. Its all over - cause it isn't. It need not be, communicating and talking, we women do well but men not so much.

SO having our Prostate Care Nurses and the PCFA helpline along with Communities we are building like The Long Run HELP. This is where donations are also spent - they DO make a difference.

Alicia in Dubbo our Prostate Cancer Nurse is a god send - well no she is sent by people like you who are willing to donate to my cause.

Personally I would like Urologists / Oncologists and those involved in making 'aids' to help these men have better quality of life. I know they have their job to do and they are amazing (majority of) at doing their best to understand and see as many patients as they can, but when we have shared somethings our own Urologist has said "Really, well I didn't think that would happen".

I get so FRUSTRATED thinking that mechanical hearts are out there, all the organ transplants that can be done yet here we are with a bladder the size of a walnut, that's useless and causes endless pain and therefore relationship tension, yet nothing else can be done but bore a hole through your lower core - RIGHT ON A MANS WAISTLINE - get a tube in there with a balloon on the end so it doesn't come out, and have it drain in to a bag that is designed for men who are going to sit in a chair all day.

When you pack to go anywhere (I am sure we can do this again one day!) a whole kit goes with us.

DID YOU KNOW: The bladder will immediately start to close over the moment that catheter comes out of its wall? We would be lucky to make it to Mudgee (25min) without that hole closing right over. So if it came out for any reason - its all action stations.

DO I seem angry - you bet I am. Why can a bladder not be made? transplanted? Why do these leg bags have horrible material on the back of them that stick to your skin & Velcro straps that cut the shit out of your leg at the back, when you bend and move? Why do they have stupid taps on them that are either too hard to open up or open up all on their own. Why does the end of a catheter have an end of it that grates on the inside of said walnut size bladders?

Taking some things into ones hands, out came the earlier mentioned sewing machine. Rocking a Friday night making girdles out of suspenders, as you do. Dig out some  braces/suspenders and start chopping them up to refashion them.
So it becomes a belt around the waist with two straps that have clips in the end that attach to the top of the said leg bags. At least this takes away a strap from digging in and destroying the back of a leg.

There are of course also the 'nights bags' which obviously hold more fluid, "You just hang them at the side of your bed" experts say.
Not here, some times the pain caused from the Catheter can only be eased if this bag sits on the bed - almost like gravity playing cruel games. So sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't, they are not a thicker material either. Just a lovely plastic that can omit its content smell nice and gently to bed linen. Change them every day i hear you suggest - yes that' would be great if you could afford to buy all this stuff in bulk.

To all the Men & their off-siders out there keep on going. Get creative to make your life easier and don't be afraid to ask for better things. Let your care team know exactly what does or doesn't work for you. You deserve it.

Men - follow up on ANY niggles you may have. Just a small stream sometimes? have weird pain down there sometimes? Over 50 - get the PSA blood test with your GP. It's THAT SIMPLE.

So donations are put to good use - I can personally a test to it as I have seen monies raised in action and to be a grateful recipient via our Care Nurses we are forever grateful. SO if you can please make a donation as I continue to huff and puff around my area for the month of September - to get awareness out there and share stories that can hit home as to WHY this cancer needs the help it does. The kind of help to put it back in its well deserved never to kill men corner.

Puds experience we want to share so it brings hope and results in treatments and care, be it too late for himself.

Here is to suspenders, may they never ever stop being made & to my Janome sewing machine and my Friday nights.

WHY DO IT AGAIN

Well here we are 12months on from the news Pud's hormone treatment is no longer working.

12months on from the most humbling experience in my life to date in raising funds & awareness for the Long Run with amazing group of people with me and supporting me.

Have his levels risen? Yes- but thankfully so far only slightly.
There has been a procedure in that time to increase the size of his permanent catheter that enters his bladder just below the belly button. It gets changed every 6-8 weeks and drains to his 'external bag' 24/7.

Are there issues with this? HELL YES, almost daily.

Are there issues with being on Hormone treatment for extended period of time? HELL YES

Are there stages where he just wants to give up? HELL YES

Are there stages where I want to just give up? HELL NO.

In my 50 years I have become too familiar with the indescribable pain that saying a final goodbye to someone you love, with all your being does to your heart and soul.

SO NO I am not giving up on him or the PCFA or other patients or other carers, I need to do this for ALL these people and others of other cancers.

It is shit, but I'll be buggard if I am going to not give life the best I can at any point. Anyone's numbers up at any stage so while I am living, i may as well get in and give it a red hot go & The Long Run is one of my true passions. LETS DO THIS.

I Am Well and Truly In It

Mid September and it's on..

Because I know money raised last year saw Prostate Cancer Nurses and the help line rolled out!

Personally this was amazing 🤩

I would start at $1 for target because at the end of September I and the Foundation will be happy with whatever we are able to raise. But there is a minimum. Lol.

I am knocking on the door of 72km, so may as well just keep going and see where the number ends up.

Donations are tax deductible donation to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

I have Rex my new Trek bike, we bonded over a 24km ride just now, so we are fired up.

I am so close to $2000 - give it a bash with me. The funds work - Pud & I witness it in action.

If you don't want to do 'the thing' online, hell that's no issue message me - get in touch with me & we will work that out.

So while I huff & puff around getting the awareness out there with my dressed up bike & front gate, let me know your there cheering me on.
